Businesses are now asking how to appear in AI-generated answers as well as conventional search results. It is a reasonable question, but there is a lot of noise around ‘secret’ optimisation methods that promise to make a brand show up inside an AI response.
Google’s Search Central documentation is clear: established SEO fundamentals still apply to Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. It does not require a special schema type or an AI-only file to qualify for those features. A useful strategy starts with making your website genuinely helpful, technically accessible and easy to understand.
Answer real buying questions
A prospective customer may search for ‘AI automation for small business UK’, ‘can you build a client portal?’ or ‘ChatGPT training for staff’. These are different intents. A general homepage that says you ‘transform businesses with AI’ is unlikely to answer all of them well.
Create one clear page for each meaningful service and write it for the person making the decision. Explain the deliverable, who it is for, the likely first step, practical constraints and what happens next. Specificity beats a wall of interchangeable marketing language.
Five improvements that matter
- Clear information architecture: descriptive headings, logical menus and internal links between related services and articles.
- Original, useful detail: examples, decision criteria, limitations and grounded answers that cannot be copied from a generic template.
- Technical foundations: crawlable pages, mobile usability, a sensible sitemap, canonical URLs and accurate titles and descriptions.
- Credibility: transparent ownership, contact information, sourced statistics and honest claims rather than invented case studies.
- Measurement: review Search Console queries and engagement, then improve pages based on questions visitors still cannot answer.
What structured data can and cannot do
Structured data helps machines understand what a page represents. A factual Article schema can identify a headline, publisher and dates. Organisation and service information can clarify business identity. It does not guarantee a prominent AI answer, a rich result or a ranking improvement.
A page needs to work before adding markup: readable HTML, strong internal linking and an actual article at a stable URL. A slider that contains only excerpts is not a substitute for indexable, full-length posts.
Write for people and AI retrieval
Use direct answers where they are useful. Follow them with the reasoning, limitations and examples that help someone make a decision. Define specialist terms once. Avoid pretending to have data, case studies or customer results you do not possess. Google’s helpful-content guidance explicitly warns against pages created chiefly to manipulate search traffic.
Beware of vanity metrics
Search visibility is affected by competition, location, personalisation, site history and changing features. Nobody can responsibly guarantee that your business will be the answer returned by a chatbot. Evaluate enquiry quality, conversion and whether people find the correct service just as carefully as impressions and rankings.
A practical next step for your website
Choose five questions your customers actually ask. Check whether your website provides specific answers and a clear route to the next action. Improve those pages first, connect them through a sensible navigation flow, and add relevant explanatory articles—not dozens of empty keyword pages.
Fast AI Innovation can help with the strategy, content structure and technical side of AI-ready websites. The aim is not to trick a search engine. It is to make your expertise visible, understandable and useful.
